Home Repair Grants for Homeowners

Home repair and improvement grants from $50,000 to $100,000 for roofs, electrical work, accessibility and weatherization. Check eligibility and apply.

Home Repair Grants, explained honestly.

Home repair grants fund the work that keeps a house safe, accessible and weather-tight — roof replacement, electrical rewiring, insulation and accessibility modifications. They are not designed for cosmetic remodelling.

The Homestead Renewal Initiative in our catalogue offers $50,000 to $100,000, reimbursed against verified invoices from licensed contractors. Up to 10% of the award can be applied to permit fees and required inspections.

Because reimbursement programmes reward organisation, the application file matters as much as the work itself. This page sets out who qualifies, what is covered and how to structure estimates, permits and invoices so the claim is paid without avoidable delays.

Application Path

How to apply, step by step.

The same five-stage path applies whether you handle the application yourself or engage FedOP for support.

  1. 01

    Document the need

Photograph the area requiring work and collect two licensed contractor estimates. Incomplete estimates are the most common cause of delay.

  2. 02

    Submit the application

We assemble ownership proof, estimates, photographs and permit documents into a single reviewed file.

  3. 03

    Eligibility and site review

The programme confirms eligibility and may schedule an on-site review before issuing an award.

  4. 04

    Complete the work

Approved work is completed by your licensed contractor under the programme's disbursement schedule.

  5. 05

    Submit invoices for reimbursement

Keep every invoice and permit. Reimbursement is paid against verified receipts, followed by a final inspection photograph.

FAQ

Home Repair Grants, Answered.

Direct answers to the questions applicants ask most often about this category.

Full grant FAQ
Can renters apply for home repair grants?
The programmes listed here are for owner-occupants. Renters should raise repairs with their landlord; some jurisdictions run separate rental repair schemes, but they are outside this catalogue.
Is the money paid upfront?
No. This is a reimbursement grant: you complete approved work, submit verified invoices and are reimbursed. Plan cash flow accordingly before work begins.
Can I choose my own contractor?
You can, provided the contractor is licensed where required and the work is supported by two comparable estimates. We help vet the paperwork, not the construction quality.
Are cosmetic upgrades eligible?
Generally no. The programme targets safety-critical, accessibility-critical and weatherization work. Cosmetic-only improvements are excluded.
Do I need permits?
Where the local jurisdiction requires permits for the work, yes. Permit costs can be included within the programme's 10% allowance for fees and inspections.
