Grant Basics
A grant is money awarded for a defined purpose, usually without repayment. It is not a universal benefit, and it is not a lottery: every programme has an eligibility definition, a review process and a set of conditions attached to the award.
Grants differ from loans in three important ways. They generally do not create a debt, they are restricted to specific uses, and they are awarded competitively rather than issued on demand. Some programmes — particularly business facilities — blend a grant with concessional debt for the revenueable share of a project.
